The Cathedral of Santa María de Regla de León is a magnificent 13th-century Catholic church and the episcopal see of the Diocese of León in northwestern Spain. Recognized as one of the greatest works of Gothic architecture with French influences, it is affectionately known as Pulchra Leonina ('Beautiful Leonese') and stands along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. The cathedral is world-renowned for taking Gothic 'dematerialization' to the extreme—minimizing stone walls to feature one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in the world. In 1844, it became Spain's first officially declared national monument.
