The Gorges de l'Ardèche is a dramatic 30-kilometer canyon carved by the river from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, often called the "European Grand Canyon." Drawing over a million visitors each year, much of this historic and archaeological site is protected as a nature reserve (Réserve Naturelle Gorges de l'Ardèche).
Key Features & Activities:
- Pont d'Arc: An iconic natural arch measuring 60 meters wide and 54 meters high at the entrance of the gorge.
- Water Sports: Because large parts of the canyon are inaccessible by land, canoeing and kayaking are the most popular ways to explore it. Overnight camping is restricted to two designated bivouac shelters.
- Wildlife & Archaeology: The soaring cliffs provide habitat for rare species like Bonelli's eagle. Human presence spans over 300,000 years across more than 2,000 caves, including the famous painted Chauvet Cave.
