entry
Tijuca National Park is an expansive urban rainforest located in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Recognized as part of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, it is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
Originally reforested during the 19th century under the Second Empire to protect the city's drinking water supply from coffee farm deforestation, the park is a landmark of ecological restoration. Today, it serves as a sanctuary for over 230 species of animals and birds, including capuchin monkeys, coatis, agoutis, marmosets, hummingbirds, and thrushes.
