Cathedral of Hajdúdorog

The Cathedral of Hajdúdorog (officially the Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Presentation of Mary) is the seat of the Archeparchy of Hajdúdorog and one of the most significant churches of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church.
History & Architecture
- Origins: While a church in the medieval settlement of Dorogegyháza was recorded in 1312, the current structure rests on 17th-century foundations.
- Cathedral Status: Elevated to a cathedral by Pope Pius X in 1912.
- Restoration: The most recent restoration was completed in 2006.
Interior Highlights
The interior strongly reflects Greek Catholic liturgical traditions. Its central feature is a 200-year-old iconostasis standing 11 meters (36 feet) tall, which holds 54 holy images and is considered one of Hungary's most important iconostases.
Local Life & Traditions
With over 80% of Hajdúdorog's inhabitants identifying as Greek Catholic, the cathedral serves as the heart of town life. Major highlights include the Christmas procession and traditional Easter services featuring the sanctification of pászka (traditional Easter bread).
