The Radishchev Art Museum in Saratov opened to the public on June 29, 1885, as Russia's first major public art museum outside Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Founded by painter Alexey Bogolyubov, it was named after his grandfather, the 18th-century writer Alexander Radishchev. Bogolyubov fought a persistent legal battle to secure permission for the name, successfully creating the first art museum in Russia open to everyone—years ahead of Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery and Saint Petersburg's Russian Museum.
Collection Highlights:
- Works by renowned Russian masters including Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Ivan Kramskoy, Vasily Polenov, and Fyodor Rokotov.
- Avant-garde and 20th-century art by Pavel Kuznetsov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Aleksandra Ekster, Robert Falk, and Martiros Saryan.
- European pieces by Camille Corot and Auguste Rodin.
- Early donations from figures such as Pavel Tretyakov and Pauline Viardot.
