The Co-cathedral of St. Mark the Evangelist (Katedrala sv. Marka evanđelista) is a striking Baroque church situated in the heart of Makarska on Andrija Kačić Miošić Square.
History & Highlights
- Origins: Construction began in 1700 under Bishop Nikola Bijanković, and the church was consecrated in 1756.
- Sacred Relics: The right altar houses the relics of St. Clement, the patron saint of Makarska, brought from the Roman catacombs in 1725.
- Artistic Treasures: On the left, an altar features a Byzantine-style painting of the Virgin and Child, alongside life-size wooden statues at the Altar of the Holy Cross.
- Renovations: After sustaining severe damage in the 1962 earthquake, the interior was restored, featuring a main altar crafted by Venetian masters and new organs added in 1970.
