Disenchantment Bay extends southwest for 16 km (9.9 mi) from the mouth of Russell Fiord to Point Latouche at the head of Yakutat Bay in Alaska.
Historical & Natural Highlights:
- Origin of the Name: In 1792, Spanish explorer Alessandro Malaspina named it Puerto del Desengaño ("bay of disenchantment") upon discovering that it did not lead to the legendary Northwest Passage, finding his path blocked by ice near Haenke Island.
- Geological Significance: During the earthquake of September 10, 1899, portions of the bay were raised by 14.43 metres (47 feet 4 inches), marking the greatest vertical displacement ever recorded from an earthquake.
