Al-Maghtas, officially known as Baptism Site "Bethany Beyond the Jordan", is an archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the east bank of the Jordan River. It is traditionally venerated as the location of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist since at least the Byzantine era.
The site encompasses two main areas connected by the Wadi Kharrar stream:
- Jabal Mar-Elias (Elijah's Hill): Features the remnants of an ancient monastery, traditionally identified as the place of ascension of the prophet Elijah.
- Jordan River Area: Contains the remains of historic churches, baptism ponds, and dwellings for pilgrims and hermits.
Located along an ancient strategic route between Jerusalem and the King's Highway, Al-Maghtas remains a major spiritual destination attracting pilgrims, tourists, and world leaders alike.
