entry
Tapa Sardar (Tepe Sardar) is an ancient Buddhist stupa and monastery complex situated on a hill overlooking the Dasht-i Manara plain, just four kilometers southeast of Ghazni, Afghanistan.
The site is remarkable for showcasing two distinct artistic phases:
- Hellenistic phase spanning the 3rd to 6th centuries CE.
- Sinicized-Indian phase dating from the 7th to 9th centuries CE.
Extensively explored by the Italian Archaeological Mission (IsMEO) between 1959 and 1977, with further excavations in 2003, Tapa Sardar is one of the region's most significant archaeological landmarks.
