Historic Aqueduct in the Azores
Muro das Nove Janelas (Wall of Nine Windows) is a unique, 19th-century aqueduct that forms part of the historic Carvão water supply system. This impressive structure was once used to transport fresh water from the mountainous interior of São Miguel island directly to the city of Ponta Delgada.
Unique Architecture
The structure owes its name to its characteristic nine arches arranged in two rows (five on the top and four on the bottom). These "windows" are not merely decorative—they were engineered to allow strong oceanic winds to pass through, protecting the stone wall from collapsing.
Tips for Visitors
- Hiking Trail: The site is located along the popular but demanding Sete Cidades – Pico da Cruz – Muro das Nove Janelas trail.
- Atmospheric Vibes: Visiting the aqueduct on a foggy day is highly recommended, as the mist adds a mysterious, almost mystical atmosphere to the location.
